Saskatchewan is well known for having the food, fuel, fertilizer, and critical minerals that the world needs. This reputation is something we could not have earned without our potash industry.
We are fortunate to have the world’s premier potash mining companies operating in Saskatchewan, accounting for one-third of global potash production. Their expertise and innovation continue to drive the sector forward and have cemented our province’s status as the world’s most stable and reliable potash producer.
Saskatchewan’s potash industry is key to our province’s prosperity, directly employing 6,300 people and indirectly supporting thousands more through related economic activity. It has contributed billions of dollars in royalties and taxes which help to fund the services and programs on which Saskatchewan residents rely.
Over the past two decades, Saskatchewan potash producers have invested more than $35 billion into mine development and expansion, ensuring steady production and job creation. Recent and ongoing investments, such as the K+S solution mine at Bethune and the BHP Group’s Jansen project, show the level of long-term confidence in Saskatchewan’s potash industry. In fact, BHP’s Jansen project investment of an estimated $19 billion is not only the largest in the company’s history, it’s also the largest investment in Saskatchewan history.
Our government understands the potash industry is a core pillar of the provincial economy and critical to global food security. That’s why we have worked hard to create a stable and competitive business environment that encourages continued investment. This approach is a key reason why, in the Fraser Institute’s mining survey, mining executives from around the world have rated Saskatchewan as the top jurisdiction in Canada and the third most attractive in the world for investment. This will be the ninth time over the last decade our province has been ranked in the top three globally. Canada also earned first place in the Mining Journal’s World Risk Report, naming our country as the lowest-risk mining region in the world.
As global food demand continues to grow, Saskatchewan is well-positioned to meet this need and strengthen its role in the global supply chain. Our potash is exported to over 70 countries, including key markets in Asia, Latin America, and Europe. As a proven agricultural powerhouse, Saskatchewan takes pride in supplying the fertilizer other countries require to reach their full agricultural potential.
We are fortunate to have abundant, high-quality reserves of a resource that is crucial to feeding the world. By conservative estimates, Saskatchewan alone could supply world demand at current levels for several hundred years.
Saskatchewan’s potash industry will continue to be a cornerstone of global agriculture for many years to come. With ongoing investment, market expansion and responsible resource management, we are securing a bright future for our province.
